Marine Systems-min

As an island surrounded by water and one of the busiest ports in the world, Singapore is highly vulnerable to maritime security threats.

Inland, our porous waters run into the Singapore River, Kallang Basin, and Marina Reservoir, where prime locations, such as Parliament House, the Marina Bay floating platform, and the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort reside. The Marina Bay locale is a popular venue for major scale events including the National Day Parade and the F1 Grand Prix.

In the face of a heightened terror status, maritime threats are more apparent than ever before. Our engineers at the Marine Systems Centre of Expertise work alongside the Home Team on technical solutioning from cradle to grave and strategising the way ahead. With the innovation and operationalisation of useful technologies, our Patrol Coast Guards and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) are better equipped to secure our borders, defend against intrusions, effectively fight fires, and handle chemical-biological-radiological (CBR) incidents at sea.

For SCDF, we have leveraged technologies in dynamic positioning and automated fire monitors to deliver Heavy Fire Fighting Vessels with about three times more firefighting capabilities and the world’s largest water monitor capacity. By simultaneously incorporating CBR protection capabilities onboard these fire boats, officers are now able to fight fires in a contaminated environment, with support from on-site endurance to manage such situations over a protracted timeframe. Our centre has also deployed a high-speed Heavy Rescue Vessel equipped with first responder type medical care accessibilities and a capacity large enough to rescue up to 300 persons at sea, about 15 times the capacity of a typical commercial cargo ship.

Relevance and readiness are rooted in understanding the ever-evolving operational environment of Home Team Departments. Our centre is committed to continuously develop cutting-edge capability road maps for the reinforcement of Maritime Security.
