Fans of James Bond movies often fantasize about the heavily fortified Aston Martin DB11 cars and the cleverly designed gadgets that Q equips James with to accomplish his missions. In reality, the use of high-tech vehicular platforms and weapons to keep law and order is much closer to home than we might imagine.
Think of automatic number plate recognition on the move, specialised armoured vehicles that can neutralise threats or protect their occupants, fully electric Pump Ladders for firefighting and rescue operations, and autonomous vehicles. These are just some of the advanced vehicles you can expect to see supporting today’s Home Team missions.
At the forefront of developing these new high-tech vehicles and weapons is HTX’s Vehicle and Weapon Systems Centre of Expertise. The team leads the exploration and adoption of technologies on vehicular platforms, weapon systems, and armaments to support various Home Team operations. They design and customise robust platforms integrated with cutting-edge technologies to respond to emergencies and to deter and disrupt threats with greater precision and speed.
Technology successfully deployed in operations includes the Tactical Vehicle, the Next Generation Fast Response Car, and the Tactical Strike Vehicle used by the Singapore Police Force, as well as the electric Pump Ladder utilised by the Singapore Civil Defence Force. The team is also incorporating artificial intelligence, wireless communication technologies, and smart targeting systems in the development of advanced weapon systems and ammunition projects.
Additionally, modelling and simulation of weapon ballistic effects is an important in-house capability being developed to support Home Team officers in their mission planning and execution—enabling them to effectively address the evolving spectrum of homeland security threats.
